U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has intensified his scrutiny over Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspect in last summer’s failed assassination attempt against President Trump, following a recent interview.
During Wednesday’s appearance on “Pod Force One,” Johnson voiced strong concerns about the lack of information surrounding Crooks and defended his July action to subpoena records from the FBI. “All of a sudden I realize, here we are a year later, I haven’t heard a peep out of this,” he lamented during the podcast.
“We still don’t know about what did his social media accounts say? Why have all these questions gone unanswered?” Johnson questioned directly. He also noted, “There’s some odd things about it… him appearing in commercials for BlackRock just like the other potential assassin down in Palm Beach.”
Crooks, a 20-year-old whose shot grazed Trump’s ear during a July 13 rally in Pennsylvania, was ultimately killed by countersnipers. He also injured another individual at that scene.
In his explanation of the inquiry, Johnson clarified: “My subpoenas to this administration are friendly subpoenas, just kind of to prompt action.” Emphasizing awareness of the immense challenges faced by the Trump administration, he added understanding for why certain questions about Crooks might not be prioritized immediately. However, he stressed that these unanswered issues could undermine confidence in their resolution.
Johnson has publicly sought assistance from telecommunications companies regarding his probe into potential gaps in information around Crooks. “I think this was a news outlet, it might have been New York Post [that] did a geo-positioning search,” Johnson pointed out. He expressed concern about the questions that remain unanswered, explaining: “It’s those kind of questions… that go unanswered that just feed into conspiracy theories.”
Further investigation is expected as the inquiry proceeds.
