Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), a leading voice for impeachment efforts in Congress, has prepared to introduce articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth despite facing significant resistance from fellow Democrats and the GOP leadership. The new allegations focus on Hegseth’s use of private messaging apps and his involvement in operations targeting suspected drug-carrying boats in the Caribbean region.
Thanedar’s office cited an advisory recommending that the articles accuse Hegseth of “Murder and Conspiracy to Murder and Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information.” The plan for presenting these charges was set to be unveiled on Thursday at a rally held by FLARE—a group dedicated to impeaching President Donald Trump—at Union Station in Washington, D.C.
This initiative comes after Thanedar’s first major impeachment attempt against President Trump earlier this year. That effort centered on the Russia probe and included accusations of obstruction of justice and other serious misconduct, which were swiftly condemned as premature by party leadership. Despite that setback, Thanedar has now directed his attention toward Secretary Hegseth in what he views as a separate but equally critical case demanding immediate legislative action.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) dismissed the prospects of impeaching Secretary Hegseth outright. “Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor,” Jeffries stated during a recent press conference, adding that President Trump would block any such move regardless of political realities or procedural votes.
Impeachment remains an incredibly contentious issue among Democrats. While grassroots supporters within Congress continue to push for accountability measures against administration officials including Secretary Hegseth himself and other figures deemed responsible by Thanedar’s office, senior party members view the path as procedurally hopeless with little support in either chamber given current political dynamics.
