The White House has criticized Republicans for inadequate efforts following a recent vote that could grant Democrats up to four additional congressional seats in Virginia.
A White House official quipped, “It’s funny how Virginia Republicans are grumbling — my question to them is how much they spent?” The official added, “Where were members of Congress during this? It was their seats that got lost.”
According to reports, the White House has expressed frustration over being held accountable for every Republican defeat.
Republicans have directed criticism toward President Donald Trump, blaming the ongoing Iran conflict and rising gas prices — issues they claim undermined their campaign message of economic recovery.
Additionally, House Republicans are angry at Trump for initiating the redistricting conflict by pressuring Texas to redraw electoral maps, a move they argue could secure five additional Republican seats and help the party maintain control in the 2026 midterms.
Representative Jay Obernolte (R-California) said, “It was a mistake to go down this road. Virginia doesn’t change my mind — I thought Texas was a mistake and California was a mistake made by Democrats.”
In Virginia, Democrats spent three times as much as Republicans despite Republicans holding a significant national financial advantage.
Trump joined House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) for a single tele-rally urging Virginians to vote against the referendum.
A White House official stated that there would have been no harm if Trump had visited areas such as southeast Virginia (including Virginia Beach) or southwest Virginia to mobilize voters more effectively. “I don’t know where the president was — or where his team was,” another White House official added.
White House officials expressed confidence in Republicans’ strong record for the midterms, noting they anticipate the Iran conflict will be largely resolved by the time voters take notice. A senior White House official stated, “Take a look at the One Big Beautiful Bill — our historic tax cuts. People are already feeling the benefits.” The official further noted, “Examine what we’ve achieved on inflation, prescription drugs, mortgage rates, and rental costs — they’re all at historic lows. We have a strong record to build upon.”
A White House insider asserted that voters would trust Republicans over Democrats on critical issues such as inflation, economic stability, reducing the national debt and deficit, and crime. “Issues like inflation, the economy, lowering the debt and deficit, and crime — Republicans hold clear advantages over Democrats in direct comparisons,” the person stated.
Florida remains the last state to potentially redraw electoral maps ahead of the midterms. White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair noted his office has not been actively involved in the effort. “Their track record shows they know how to draw maps in compliance with Florida law and the constitution, and we’ll see what they do next week,” Blair said.
Sam Barron, who has covered politics, crime, and business for nearly two decades, reported.
