Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Wednesday he supports eliminating the legislative filibuster in the Senate to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.
The legislation would require voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering for federal elections and valid photo identification at polling places.
Johnson stated that Democrats are blocking the law, calling it “existential” to their strategy of turning America into a one-party nation. He added that the only way to pass the legislation is by ending the filibuster, noting that while the Senate has largely dismantled the rule, reconciliation measures do not require a 60-vote threshold.
“We’re at the bottom of the hill when it comes to the filibuster,” Johnson said. “Let’s try and save America while we still have a chance.”
Johnson also warned that Democrats will end the filibuster once they gain the opportunity: “We better beat them to the punch.”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded Republican senators eliminate the filibuster and pass the law, though Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., stated he lacks the votes.
