46% of Minnesotans Would Prefer a Republican Candidate Over Governor Walz in Next Gubernatorial Race

Minnesota’s Republican Party Chair Alex Plechash warned on Wednesday that the state’s welfare fraud scandal could undermine decades of Democratic dominance, claiming voter frustration over alleged fraud and oversight failures in state-run social service programs is already shifting political loyalties.

Plechash cited recent polling for the 2026 gubernatorial race showing “40% of those polled would vote for Walz, whereas 46% would vote for a Republican opponent — even without a name.” He described Minnesota as the epicenter of what he called one of the largest welfare fraud scandals in U.S. history, with alleged losses exceeding $9 billion across multiple programs.

Plechash accused state leadership of ignoring whistleblower warnings, suppressing oversight mechanisms, and withholding public records as billions were allegedly siphoned from state-administered social service programs for children, seniors, and low-income families. “We have a governor who ignored the warnings, shut out whistleblowers, and is still hiding records from the public,” Plechash stated.

The Minnesota GOP chair emphasized that repeated failures to address misuse of public funds have allowed fraud to proliferate, prompting federal intervention. He argued this crisis is reshaping voter behavior in an overwhelmingly Democratic state, with growing discontent over how state leaders manage critical social programs.
